“I Bet My Nipple to Grow”: Dancing within Onco-Bodying Relations
Zaragoza, Spain, December 2nd, 2016.
“I bet my nipple to grow” (I risked my nipple to
improve) 1 Letizia spoke.
She then signed this phrase with her hands.
We all stood around and tried to repeat the movement.
She was wagering with her breast.
Her right hand was in a fist, her thumb was poking out
between her middle and pointer finger.
As we practiced the movement phrase she told us about
the life of her nipple.
It was removed due to breast cancer and just after the
surgery she was asked if she would consent to offer
her nipple to research. She pictured her nipple in a
crystal bottle on a lab shell. “Where might my nipple
have gone?” she asked.
Molecular becomings beyond Medicalization.
The above story emerged
Oncological relations tend to be fixating ones. Since the
moment of a diagnosis, the western biomedical-cultural system
dictates intervention protocols and cultural myths that
objectify bodies and subject individuals into fixed categories
of ‘patient’, ‘survivor’, or ‘positive fighter.’ These onco-body
relations can stiffen anatomies and restrict subjective
imaginaries and affective responses. Built in capitalist,
sexist, ableist, racist, and human exceptionalist logics,
processes of medicalization also codify access to treatments,
possible biomedical research, and modes of sociality that care
for the neoliberal subject and the mercantilization of the
disease (as seen in the pink ribbon October campaign). Embroiled
in these logics and processes, people diagnosed with cancer are
fixed into medicalized subjects, isolated from their
environment, and deprived from imaginaries and alternative
becomings to keep on living or dying well.
In the oncogrrrls laboratories, engaging in a
collaborative process, the participants (co-creators), refine, tease out, become entangled with, (co)imagine, and create differences from their own individual experiences with oncological treatments, while at the same time multiplying the monolithic socio-cultural stories about cancer. A quest for becoming beyond medicalization calls for molecular movements. As Deleuze and Guattari proposed, the molecular entails movementsof differentiation from the molar, the coded whole (Deleuze and Guattari, 1987). These movements create a kind of micro- politics that cares for creating alteriors and differentiating from this ‘medicalized’ cancerous subject. In words of feminist philosopher Rosi Braidotti, it is a search grounded in the ‘aspiration to a new collective redefinition of our shared
humanity through multiple processes of becoming’ (Braidoti2015).

La próxima semana tendrá lugar un nuevo laboratorio-residencia de investigación-creación oncológica, oncogrrrls, en la ciudad de Zaragoza.
Onco Poética es una residencia de creación artística de 10 días de duración, nacida de los encuentros y amistades generadas en la capital Aragonesa el pasado diciembre. Del 8 al 17 de septiembre, poesia visual, danza, performance, improvisación, bio-arte y las experiencias de las participantes, co-creadoras, serán el material del que partir y crear nuevos significados y afectos. Haciendo de nuestra condición, ensayo creativo.
El tránsito oncológico y sus procesos de medicalización de la vida fijan cuerpos y afectos limitando nuestras posibilidades de devenir, convirtiéndonos en ‘pacientes’, ‘siempre positivas’ y/o ‘luchadoras del lazo rosa’. Los protocolos imponen ritmos y tratamientos, los tratamientos enquilosan cuerpos y la cultura biomedica occidental aisla experiencias y crea sujetxs, individuxs aisladxs medicalizadxs.
Kevin oconnor y caro novella facilitaremos el contenedor creativo. Junto con Marta, Leticia, Bea, Mónica y Sofía, lanzamos esta nueva edición con la intención de seguir creando, juntas, devenires posibles más allá de la medicalización. Una residencia de creación que tendrá lugar del 8 al 16 de septiembre y que culminará en una presentación pública del proceso creativo el Domingo 17. En esta edición contaremos también con la colaboración de colectivos de arte y feministas como Quimera Rosa (transplant), Amor de Primas (fanzines feministas) y Keka (audiovisuales).
Onco Poética es parte de un proyecto donde arte, cáncer y feminismos se encuentran para generar vidas más vivibles y generar tejidos oncológicos más fuertes en el territorio. El laboratorio-residencia Onco Poética es parte de una propuesta de arte comunitario y activismo oncológico que contempla, también, la organización de unas jornadas sobre cáncer, feminismos y arte que tendrán lugar a finales de año, y que cuenta con la ayuda del Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza.
